TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

MUSIC

For beginning students, I will be using the Alfred Piano Method books. Each level consists of four books: Lesson, Technique, Theory and Recital. I feel that this particular method covers the different areas of piano learning quite well. The Lesson book consists of pieces that introduce different aspects of music, for instance, the C scale, or playing with both hands. The Technique book covers short exercises to help build up speed, articulation, phrasing, and other important techniques. The Theory book involves the fundamentals of music, including note values, key signature and timing. Finally, the Recital book is a supplement to the Lesson book, providing the student with pieces to play in a performance setting.

For my adult students, I will use the Alfred Adult Piano Method.

For students who have had prior lessons elsewhere, we will discuss which method they wish to continue with.

For each of my students, I will acquire the music books, the cost of which will be added to your monthly payment.

THEORY

The Carrollton Music Teachers Association has two theory tests each year, one in the fall, and one in the spring.  Students are classified into ability levels for each test, and have an opportunity to earn a medal. It is recommended that my students take one of these tests.  I feel that music theory is an important aspect of piano instruction, because it provides a foundation for not only piano, but other instruments as well. Around a month before the test, time will be spent working with the student on the theory test items during their weekly lesson. If possible, maybe a practice test session will be arranged.

RECITALS

Recitals will be held for my students a few times a year. Some will be informal pizza parties where the students will play for each other, as well as more formal recitals where the parents attend.  I feel that recitals are an excellent opportunity for students to learn how to play in front of other people, as well as to show family members how well they have progressed through the year. Special performances, such as performing at a retirement home, may be arranged periodically.

FESTIVALS

The Carrollton Music Teachers Association sponsors different festivals throughout the year. What this involves, is a student plays a selection before a qualified judge, and receives a critique. These festivals help a student learn of their strengths, and also of things they can improve upon. Students are strongly encouraged to enter some festivals.

MATERIALS

Students are asked to supply a stenographer sized spiral notebook, so I can write down their assignments each week.

I will be supplying each student with a practice chart, attached to one of their books. The chart is to provide a log of daily practice. The student practices for the advised thirty minutes, then the parent signs to show that the student completed their practice time.

MY HISTORY

My experience includes having received ten years of piano instruction, as well as seven years of percussion instruction. I am a seven year medalist on the State of Texas Theory Test, and received superior ratings at the National Piano Playing Auditions for ten years. I have performed with various orchestras and bands around the area, including the Dallas Junior Symphony. Presently, I  am a member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Orchestra, and the Carrollton Community Band. I am currently pursuing my doctorate in Pediatric School Psychology at the University of North Texas.
