I got a phone call, waking me up this morning. It was the manager of the CCA pantry, calling to ask if I could come in and work today. I got up rather grudgingly, but once I got there and saw how busy they were, I was glad that I was able to help! After all of the customers had left, I counted the vouchers from today. There were seventy-three, meaning we had seventy-three customers in a four-hour period! Wow! That's a lot of people! We also found out that next week, we are getting touch screen computers at the registers, and in a few weeks, scanners. This will make being a cashier a whole lot easier, however, it takes away the thinking aspect of the job, which I rather enjoy.

Saturday, we helped our friend Leia move to her new apartment. It's a neat place, with wooden floors, lots of storage space, and a window A/C unit with a remote control. We had a bit of a fiasco with the moving truck, as whoever took Leia's order apparently had gone to Idiot School and told her on Saturday that they would call her when the truck was ready. Which, they never did. However, we had several people there, so we only had to make a couple of trips. One thing that was funny, was that several of the guys were wearing white shirts and khaki shorts, and all but one of the girls were wearing white shirts and black shorts. We called it our uniform. After getting Leia moved in, David and I took off and went to his place, to shower and cool off. We also tried out a new restaurant, called TJ's. I had a grilled pizza that I thought was fairly decent, although I've had better. (My father makes the world's greatest pizza, so I am perhaps a bit picky). I know I slept really, really well on Saturday night. I crashed hard!

Sunday morning was church as usual. The sermon series is on growing deeper with God, and yesterday's message was on knowing God. I thought it was a great sermon, and thought of a great book that went along with the sermon, called Experiencing God. I went up to our church's library afterwards, and apparently, someone had the same idea as me, as it was already checked out. I did find some good books, one of which is a Christian mystery book. I also saw a notice in the library, wanting people to come in and work in the library on Sundays. Since I go to the early service, and my new Sunday school class (which starts next week, and I am very excited about) is during the latest worship hour, I would typically spend that time in the library reading, so I should work in there! Yay! It'll be great!

Last night, my friend Tracey and I went out to a fundraiser for the Celtic Heritage Festival out in Ft. Worth. We got there late, but got to hear two phenomenal groups, The Corsairs and Brothers 3, which, contrary to the name, had seven members. They were awesome and played some fantabulous toe-tapping, hand-clapping music! I am excited about the festival, which is in October.

The music filing party went very well on Tuesday night. The music is all in file cabinets in alphabetical order. Now we just need to make a list of all the music that the band has. As the secretary of the band, I get to do this. So, next week, I get to start on that endeavor.

Yesterday was Ladies' Day. My mom and I were discussing awhile back where to take a vacation this year. We typically go to a place and do a lot of shopping. One year we went to the Mall of America, another year we went to the West Edmonton Mall. This year, we could not decide where to go. So, we decided to take the money we would have spent on a vacation, and just have a nice day in town. That is what we did yesterday.

We started out by going to the Zales outlet store, and picking out some jewelery. After that, we went to lunch (It's amazing how diamond shopping can put a smile on your face, and work up an appetite.) During lunch, we admired our purchases and compared jewelery sparkle. After lunch, we went to Spa International for an afternoon of pampering. I got my first ever manicure, and a back/neck/shoulder massage. As I was getting my manicure, the manicurist and I were talking, and she has a son who wants to take piano lessons! Yay!

After getting pampered, we went home and relaxed, so we could get rested up for dinner. Dad came home, then the three of us went to Ruth Chris' Steakhouse. I had heard everyone who has gone there rave about the creamed spinach and au gratin potatoes, so that is what I had. Mmmmm. The best part is that I had some left over to take home. Yay! Dessert was creme brulee. It was a perfect ending to a wonderful day.

Well, as far as I can tell, the picture will show now, and the link is active too. I'm slowly but surely learning how to do this on my own.

I updated my piano site yesterday, mostly the calendar. I decided to have a slumber party for my students. I haven't decided whether I am brave or stupid for doing this. The kids say they are looking forward to it, so that is a good thing. I also went to uke last night. We meet twice a month to sing, play our ukes and generally act silly. We call ourselves the Dallas Ukelele Headquarters, or DUH for short. I have been going to these meetings for a little over a year, sometimes dragging David with me. We rehearse at this little place near White Rock Lake. So, I was there last night, and ordered a couple Cokes for David and I, as well as some fried mushrooms. I do not know what the waiter was thinking, but it took him twenty minutes to get back to me and tell me they were out of mushrooms. So I ordered something else, and they took their time getting those out, too. (It normally does not take that long, so I don't know if he was having a slow day or what.)

I have been looking for fun things to go do on weekends. I typically look for things in the paper. One such thing is this group called the Texas Astronomical Society. They are having a lecture, which looks like it would be over my head, but it did get me thinking about going to a planetarium. I took an astronomy class as an undergraduate, and we had several outdoor labs at the UNT observatory. There, the TA would show me where a certain star was, and I would pretend like I saw it. It went something like this:

TA: (pointing at invisible star) See that star?
Me: (looking for star) No, I don't.
TA: (pointing again) It's right there. See it?
Me: (looking again) No, I still don't see it.
TA: (pointing and gesturing towards invisible star) See, it is right there!
Me: (pretending to see invisible star) Oh, yeah! I see it.

Actually, I did enjoy my astronomy class, and I do like to look up at the sky and try to find the constellations that I learned about during class. David gave me a star chart, and at some point we are going to go somewhere and look for the stars on the chart. That will be lots of fun!!

I got some exciting news today. According to the UNT News Service we are having an Equity and Diversity Conference in February, and one of the speakers at the conference is Maya Angelou! How neat is that? Yay! Tonight the Carrollton Band is having another music filing party, which means a lot more music to put away, but we were making some good progress last week. Tomorrow, my mom and I are having a 'Ladies Day' in which she and I are going to go shopping, get massages and manicures, and then go out for a nice dinner. I think it will be fun.

Buenos dias! Was it just me, or did the weekend go by really fast? On Friday night, David and I ate at this place called Big Bowl. I had something called Vegetable Coconut Curry. It was very good, although I had an interesting time trying to eat it with chopsticks. The veggies were so big, I could not put the whole thing in my mouth, so I was trying to fold it with the chopsticks, which did not work. So I ate it with my fork. David, who is an experienced chopstick user, enjoyed watching me attempt to do this. One of these days, I will master chopsticks, yes I will!

Afterwards we went to Half Price Books. I was looking at the foreign language books, trying to find a good Spanish book. I was not finding anything good, except for a dictionary, which would not tell me the pronunciation. I walked over, and was looking at the Spanish software, which was, of course, on the very top shelf. David was somewhere in the store, but not close by to reach it down. After glaring at the software for a minute, I found a stool to stand on, and started to bring it over, when someone saw me and reached the software down for me. Ahh, the joys of being somewhat vertically challenged. (And I found the same software down where I could reach it right after I had the other one. Sigh.) So now I have software to teach me Spanish. I played with it yesterday and already feel smarter!

Saturday, we were supposed to go to the Warped Tour with a group of friends. Well, my stomach was bugging me, and we decided that the heat would NOT help it, so after a lunch at Freebirds we went home and took it easy. After my stomach settled down, David made some of his yummalicious chocolate chip cookies, which I got to take some home. (Yay! Thanx, David.)

Sunday. I went to the late service at church. I took it easy for most of the afternoon, and then went up to David's church to go to the Frisco Rough Riders game. It was a madhouse getting all the kids into cars, as somebody would not want to be in a car with someone else, and it would be this whole big deal to be in the same car for thirty minutes. After the kids left, David and I stayed behind to make sure no one else showed up. When we got to the game, we found our seats and the kids. Of course, the kids were running around, and not really watching the game. When it got dark, they did come and sit down. I enjoyed the game, although the Rough Riders did not win. Our group was on the Jumbo Tron once, we all stood up and screamed. Later, the camera guy came over and filmed us, and when they showed us again, everyone in our group on the left side of me was on the screen. Including the person who was sitting right next to me. That is so typical. After the game, they let kids run the bases. I wanted to do it, but they probably would not have let me. Oh well, it was a good night.

Father Daughter Bonding.

Yay! David showed me how to do this! Go, David!!!

Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to another day of HTML fun! Since I'm reading this book HTML Goodies, I am attempting to practice what I am learning on this site. I was reading the chapter on putting an image on the site, and I was having problems doing so. Does anyone have any suggestions? If so, please e-mail me. (The e-mail link is another thing that I learned today, only I think this one was actually successful.)

My toe is not as painful today, however, more than half of my foot is purple. Oh well, if I'm going to bruise up my toe, I might as well do a good job of bruising up my whole foot! On another note, yesterday I spent the morning at the CCA pantry. (Ooh, I also just learned how to type in the code for a hyperlink instead of just clicking on the "add hyperlink" button.) Anywho, back to the pantry story, I had intended on working the check-in desk, so I could sit down and rest my toe. Well, we had two regular volunteers not come yesterday. I think they were on vacation, however, it meant that I needed to be on a register. It was so busy yesterday, that with two registers open, we each had five customers with full baskets in our line. Finally, the pantry manager saw that we were swamped and came out to open the third register. That helped greatly. We also had three people come in about twenty minutes before closing, I was very surprised that they were out of the pantry by our closing time at one o clock. It was a good day, albeit very busy, and we were all quite wiped out by the time we were locking the doors after closing time.

I am quite the klutz. I am always running into things, knocking over something, or tripping over nothing. However, today I did somethat that was a doozy even for me. The coffee table and my pinky toe had a rather nasty disagreement, and guess who won? The coffee table, of course. So now my entire toe, as well as part of my foot, is a lovely shade of purple and rather swollen. I've been putting ice on it, which seems to help a little, and it only hurts when I walk on it. I don't think it is broken, but it sure hurts! How is it possible for one little toe to hurt so much?!?!?!?!?!

Last night, I went to a music filing party for the Carrollton Community Band. This entailed taking music out of the folders, putting it in score order and them placing them in the appropriate file cabinet. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, we have a TON of music! We had a filing party back a couple of months ago, and had music all over that room. It was not much better for this party. We are filing ALL the music, not just the most recent stuff. It is one of those things that is a pain to do, but we will be glad when it is finished. Next week, we are meeting again to do the same thing. Oh well, they had munchies, great music playing and good company, so it wasn't as cumbersome as it could have been. Also, they had a new 7 month-old puppy named Lillie that I had fun with. Although, she wanted to "help" file the music, which meant that she ran around all over the place. They finally had to lock her up, poor thing.

One perk about today was that I got to drive Mom's new car to the grocery store this evening. She has a beautiful sapphire blue Acura! I was all excited about getting to drive it, and would have been jumping up and down if not for my sore toe. It made up for the not-so-fun time I had walking around the store on said toe.

Monday, July 14, 2003

Greetings! Well, it is Monday again, another week beginning. Happy Bastille Day! The good news is that I found a practicum placement starting in the fall! I e-mailed the Bmed program director, asking for suggestions, and he told me that he would send me to the UNT Health Science Center out in Ft. Worth. I will be doing some assessments and therapy, and I have heard good things from my peers who have been out there.

Although I have several books that I am currently reading, I decided to read Gone With the Wind again, which is my favorite book (and movie, for that matter.) I read it for the first time when Mom and I were visiting family up in Colorado Springs when I was sixteen. We had stopped at a bookstore, and I was trying to pick out a good book, and my aunt recommended that one. I fell in love with it immediately, enjoyed every page. I enjoyed it so much, that I finally had to get rid of my copy of it, because half of the pages were falling out! I still love to read it, which is why I am reading it again.

So that's that. Go make it a great day!

Yesterday was a glorious, fun-filled, action-packed day of fun! Dad is practicing for the big Smokefest contest coming up, so yesterday he smoked a bunch of meat. So now we have a fridge full of smoked meat. I spent part of the day running errands for my parents. I got to visit with my grandparents some more yesterday, as I was picking up a tape from them. David came over yesterday afternoon and ran an errand with me, then we ran around.

We went up to the dollar theatre in Lewisville and saw Chicago. I really enjoyed the movie. I had heard from some friends who saw the musical that it was somewhat raunchy, and it definitely was that. I really enjoyed the music, and found myself tapping my foot along with the music several times during the show. I felt that everyone in the movie did a great job, and it looked like they had a great time doing the movie. Afterwards, David and I were discussing how one of the underlying themes in the movie was very similar to how society is today. In the movie, one of the women would be in all the papers and would be talked about and attention and adoration would be given to them. Until, of course another women did something, and then the media would focus on her. We both felt that this is how our society is, as one actor will be a hot item for awhile, then the attention is focused on someone else.

After the movie and dinner at the Olive Garden (my favorite restaurant), we browsed through Barnes & Noble. I wound up buying a book on HTML. I want to learn HTML and do cool things with my website. Hopefully it will not take me too long to learn, but who knows. Today I am going with David and the youth at his church to play miniature golf. So, the kids will all get to see what a great mini-golf player that I am....not. Actually, I am rather lousy at mini-golf, however, I think the evening will be fun.

Hello, world! Thank Goodness It's Friday!! This week has been magnifique! I visited with my grandparents on Monday, and saw the pictures of the wedding. I also saw pictures of my aunt and uncle's new cabin/house up in Lake City, Colorado. We are all supposed to go up there after Christmas for a family shindig. I have fond memories of Colorado, as we have taken many family vacations up there. I remember the time we all went up to Colorado for Christmas when I was six. We went camping up there a few times (talk about chilly nights. We slept in all of our clothes.) A few years ago, we went up to Breckinridge for a vacation, we rented condos for all of us and had a grand time. Anywho, their house in Lake City is beautiful, all wood and windows, and I look forward to seeing it all covered in snow!

Wednesday night was Girls Night Out. Heather and I ran around being wild and crazy women. Okay, maybe not. But we did have a good time. We ate at this place out in The Colony called Amore. They have the best baked cream manicotti. In fact, the first time that you bite into it, you think you died and went to Heaven. We followed that up with a tirimisu. Mmmmmm. After a little shopping, we decided to take in a movie. We saw Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde. Overall, the movie was cute, but there were parts of it that were somewhat stupid. If you enjoyed the first movie, then you will most likely enjoy the second one.

Unusual Elevator Music

Last week, I went up to church for rehearsal with the orchestra and choir for our patriotic service that we had on Sunday. Well, the percussion equipment was not set up, as it was the past week. I was running around trying to get things set up, and some of the other musicians were helping me. Howard and I went to the orchestra room, and I was wheeling the bass drum towards the elevator, and he had the conga drums. I pushed the down button for the elevator, and when it stopped on our floor, we got on. Howard starting jamming on the congas and I was playing on the bass drum. Yes, we were playing in the elevator. At any rate, someone on the fourth floor pushed the button for the elevator, so we were riding in the elevator and continuing the jam session on the drums. The doors opened on the fourth floor and four bewildered faces peered out at us from the fourth floor. They all got on the elevator and continued to give Howard and I strange looks. I smiled sweetly and said,"Haven't you ever heard of elevator music? We are providing the elevator music, live!" They all thought this was funny. I did, too. It also turns out that I went to high school with one of the guys on the elevator, so that was cool. So, Howard and I provided live elevator music. (Actually it sounded more like elevator music you would hear in the jungle, but who cares, it was fun.)

What a crazy weekend! Friday afternoon, as we were setting up for the concert, I found out that one of the other percussionists had the flu. Since the three of us were struggling to get everything played, I was worried about how we were going to get everything covered. Well, David was there, and I asked him if he would like to play percussion. He agreed to, and I showed him what to play as I finished getting things set up. Poor guy, I kind of put him on the spot, but he did very well. He also got a crash course in reading percussion music, which is kind of confusing to read. After the concert we feasted on Jason's Deli sandwiches while listening to the band Inside Out. I enjoyed them, however, I was ready to get into air conditioned comfort.

Saturday started off with the reunion, then we came home and got ready for the block party. Mom's face painting was a hit! Deanna and her friend Brittany made balloon dogs, and I helped with the helium balloons. Someone was selling sno-cones, someone else had jewelry and it was a great party! The band was good, the only damper was the slight shower we got. I was very tired when we decided to take down the face painting stuff and go inside. All in all, the party was a success.

Sunday morning I was rushing around, getting things ready for church. As I went out to my car, I had a surprise waiting for me on my car. My name was spelled out in Hershey kisses, with a big heart around it, and there was a card tucked under my windshield wiper. I wanted to take a picture, but I was running late, so I put the chocolates in a bag, and drove to church. The services went very well, my only complaint was that since I was performing, I did not get to watch, so I hope they have a tape of the service. Between the services, they were serving ice cream, and I asked if I could have more because it was my birthday. She said "sure" and handed me two cups of ice cream. Of course, since I was walking around, I could not eat them, because I had both hands full, so I gave one to somebody. After the services, one of the other orchestra member brought over his toddler daughter to say Happy Birthday. He asked her to sing, and at first she didn't want to, but then I showed her a piece of chocolate, and she started singing Happy Birthday. It was really cute. I also had the other percussionists sing Happy Birthday to me, accompanied by cymbals and a bass drum.

Sunday afternoon, after opening the presents from my family, I hung around the house, eating chocolate, drinking a frappuccino, watching a movie, while wearing a tiara. Which I did wear as I drove to the post office, and got some amused looks, but I didn't care. David came to get me at six, sporting a nice suit and a bouquet of roses. We went to his apartment, and he told me that he had left something there, and I should drop off my clothes that I was going to change into later. (No, I was not still wearing the tiara). He had set up a nice dinner, with roses, candlelight and nice music. We feasted on ravioli, salad and bread, with dessert from La Madeline. It was wonderful, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Later, I opened my presents, one of which was the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's. We watched the movie after dinner, and I enjoyed it, as it is one of my favorite movies. I don't think he enjoyed it all that much, but he watched it anyway. It was a perfect night, and thanx to David for making it so special!

Happy Independence Day, everyone!! I am celebrating the day by sitting at a computer at David's office while he works on some stuff. I must admit, I was bribed by the promise of a movie afterwards. I am all decked out in patriotic garb, although I'll have to change out of it for the concert tonight, but oh well. Last night's performance was spectacular! I must admit, I was a little skeptical as to how they were going to pull off the talking clock and candlesticks and all without looking stupid. However, they did a wonderful job and I am so glad that we went! I think that the cast was having a great time, too! We ran into my pastor, his wife, their daughter and some other family members. In fact, they were in the row ahead of us. I talked to them and they really enjoyed the show, too!

Mom got a surprise this week. My father gets a company car every two years. This is the year that he was supposed to get the new car. My parents decided to sell Mom's Firebird, and that he would keep his car, and she would get the new car. Well, we had just sold the Firebird, and Mom was going on Wednesday to sign papers with the new owner. Dad had to be there to sign something, and so he came home to get her. He was driving the new car! It is a sapphire blue Acura and has all kinds of bells and whistles on it. Including a navigational system. (Which, considering my tendency to get lost, would be a good feature for me!) Mom and I went for a spin on Wednesday night and tried to confuse the navigational system. We plugged in a route and purposely took a wrong turn to see what it would do. The voice on the system kept saying "Make a U-turn if possible, make a U-turn if possible." We thought it was very funny. We also thought it would be even more funny if it said something like,"You dummy! You missed your turn!"

July 4th is a special day for me. Four years ago, I was baptized on this day. I decided that I wanted to be baptized the Sunday before I turned 21, and it happened to fall on the 4th. My parents came, along with some friends, and I think I was grinning at the whole time that I was up there getting baptized. We later went to brunch at the Grand Kempinski to celebrate. I remember that my parents were teasing me because I was two days away from being able to drink the champagne. It was a great day, and one that I will not forget. So this is why July 4th is a really great day!!

Quote of the Day: "I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free;
And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me;
And I'll gladly stand up next to you, and defend her still today;
Cause there ain't no doubt, I love this land;
God Bless the U.S.A."--Lee Greenwood

Wow, it is hard to believe that it is already July! This week has gone by so fast. The rest of it is going to be pretty busy as well. Yesterday was my last day of class. As much as I enjoyed it, I do really enjoy when a class ends. I presented my final project and my classmates said I did well, so that was good. I also had a piano student that has been gone for the past two months, so she did not attend the recital, nor did she receive her award. I asked her mom to bring her a little early and have the camera ready. She was so excited to get an award, she just wanted to sit there and hold the trophy. In fact, each time we switched to a different task, she would grab it and look at it. It was really cute, and I am glad it meant that much to her.

Last night we had another rehearsal for Sunday's patriotic service. We had all three of the percussionists there, much to the chagrin of the choir. They wanted to see me run around like a crazy person like I did last week. (Thanx, guys) Anywho, the orchestra director told me to assign the parts to the percussion section, so yesterday afternoon was spent making a list of everything we play and dividing up the parts as equally as possible. Of course, the power goes out in the middle of this, so I wound up writing it all out. Oh well. I didn't hear any complaints from my section mates. After rehearsal, I stopped by the same Starbucks as last week. They ran out of Tall cups, so I wound up with a Grande frappuccino for the price of a Tall! Yay! I am really liking this Starbucks. I should go there more often.

Today I spent the morning at the CCA pantry. I worked there during the past semester as part of a project for a class, and really enjoyed it, so I decided to stay on. I was gone during June, due to a crazy schedule, so today was my first day back. The other volunteers said several times how much they missed me and how glad they were that I am back. That made me feel really good. I work as a cashier there. We have calculators at each register, and the customers do not spend money, instead they have vouchers for a certain amount. They also have limits on how much stuff they can by. For example, someone can only get six boxed items. A lot of the customers at the pantry do not speak much English, so my knowledge of Spanish comes in handy. I do not know a whole lot, but what I do know, I learned from working in a grocery store with several Hispanic employees. We would get out the weekly ad and go through it, I would say the word in English, then they would say it in Spanish. I would like to learn Spanish, anyone know where I could learn?

Tonight David and I are going to go see Beauty and the Beast at Fair Park. According to him, we have really great seats, and I am looking forward to this a lot! Tomorrow night, the Carrollton Band is performing at the city's festivities. We get to face into the sun at five o clock, which will not be fun, but playing will. One bad thing is that one of the percussionists bailed on us, so we are struggling to get her parts covered. She had a big solo in one of the songs, and now I'm doing it, so wish me luck!

Saturday, we have a family reunion out in Wylie, with my paternal grandfather's side of the family. They have a family reunion every other year. I do enjoy going, especially when they have old pictures of family members. My grandfather is very interested in our family history, and has done a lot of research, tracing our family back at least eight generations. I like to look through our family history, and I think it is really fascinating! Saturday night, our block is having a block party. They are having a band, and my mom is doing face painting. My cousin Deanna is making balloon animals, and I think David and I might be in charge of helium balloons. Dad is doing something, I am not sure what, but probably cooking ribs. We've never had a block party, so this will be fun.

Sunday is our patriotic service. We have two of them, one at nine fifteen and one at eleven. Based on last night's rehearsal, I feel that it is going to go very well. I always enjoy these, as we get to honor the men and women who have served or are serving in the military. We also honor those who serve our community through the police, fire and medical professions. All this while worshiping God! Yay! After church, I'm going to go celebrate me being 25, yay!
